Women's Soccer Battles Rutgers-Newark to Scoreless Draw

YONKERS, N.Y. – The Sarah Lawrence College women's soccer team played Rutgers-Newark to a 0-0 draw Wednesday, September 17 at Fleming Soccer Field.

With the result, the Gryphons move to 2-0-2 on the season, while the Scarlet Raiders stand at 3-1-2.

Sarah Lawrence controlled the offensive statistics throughout the contest, finishing with a 14-4 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Gryphons also held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Junior goalkeeper Bella Vaca played all 90 minutes between the posts, making one save to preserve the shutout. Senior Stella Sturgill paced the Gryphons offensively with four shots, including three on frame.

The Gryphons generated the first scoring opportunity in the 23rd minute when Phoebe Workman put a shot on target, forcing Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper Maura Chawner to make a save. Sarah Lawrence received its first yellow card of the contest in the 28th minute when Madeline Moor was booked.

Rutgers-Newark registered its first shot in the 30th minute, but the attempt sailed high. Zoey Barth created two additional opportunities for the Gryphons during the final 16 minutes of the opening half, including one shot on goal, as the teams entered halftime scoreless.

Sarah Lawrence continued to dictate possession after the break. Katey Beaver recorded a shot on target in the 48th minute, followed by attempts from Workman, Emma Mangan, Barth and Sturgill.

The Scarlet Raiders produced their final shot, on target, in the 66th minute, but Vaca was there to make the save. From there, the Gryphons continued to apply pressure, outshooting Rutgers-Newark 6-2 over the final 21 minutes and putting four of those attempts on goal.

Despite the sustained pressure, neither team was able to find the back of the net as the match ended in a scoreless draw.

Sarah Lawrence returns to action Saturday, September 19, at 3 p.m., hosting the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Fleming Soccer Field in the Gryphons' first Skyline Conference matchup of the season.

Saturday's contest will be dedicated to Sarah Lawrence alumna Maddie Mertch, who passed away in 2021.
