NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—The Gryphons captured their fifth-straight conference invitataional title, as Sarah Lawrence College women's swimming took first place at the 2014 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Swimming Invitational, hosted by College of New Rochelle at CNR Wellness Center on Sunday.
The Gryphons won nine of 11 events, racking up 149 points, to secure the team title; St. Joseph's College Brooklyn (77 points) and host CNR (60 points) rounded out the field.
SLC previously won four-straight Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) titles, dating back to the 2009-10 season. The Gryphons preserved their winning streak in the league's first year as the HVIAC.
SLC started the day with a win in the 200 yard medley relay. Rookie
Gabby Risica (Narragansett, R.I./Narragansett), junior
Natasha Leonard (Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i/Kealakehe), first year
Colette Harley (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) and rookie
Jacqueline Quirk (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) teamed to win the event by six seconds with a time of 2:12.55.
Junior
Alexis Bates (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) gave the Gryphons their second victory, as the distance specialist dominated the field of the 1000 freestyle, winning in 12:39.44, three minutes faster than her closest opponent.
The Gryphons scored their first sweep of the day in the 200 yard freestyle. Quirk (2:23.28), Leonard (2:26.92) and sophomore
Monika Mednick (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) (2:37.20) picked up a 1-2-3 finish in the event.
Risica was SLC's lone medalist in the 50 free, beating the field with a swim of 28.44 seconds to give Sarah Lawrence its fourth win in as many events.
Sophomore captain
Sam Amberchan (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) led at the midway point of the 200 yard individual medley, but was eventually overcome by her St. Joseph's opponent and took second place in 2:40.09.
Harley triumphed in the 100 butterfly, taking the event in 1:10.80. Senior captain
Dzana Ashworth (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) also medaled, earning third place with a swim of 1:20.47.
Sarah Lawrence picked up its second sweep with a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 freestyle. Risica won the title in 1:01.34, while Quirk (1:02.93) and Leonard (1:05.87) rounded out the podium.
SJC's Morgan Summers gave the Bears a second win in the 100 yard backstroke, while Gryphons Amberchan (1:14.28) and Medick (1:17.42) also earned medals in the event.
The day's second distance race—the 500 yard freestyle—saw Harley earn another individual win with a mark of 6:06.13. Bates followed close behind with a second-place swim of 6:12.22.
In the 100 yard breaststroke, the day's final individual event featured a winning swim by Quirk (1:23.11) and a runner-up performance by sophomore
Alayna Bone (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) (1:25.82).
The Gryphons picked up their ninth win of the day as Harley, Leonard, Bates and Risica brought home a win in the 200 yard freestyle relay, combining for a time of 1:58.08.
Sarah Lawrence rounds out the regular season on Saturday, when the Gryphons travel to the Skidmore College Women's Invitational. The team then prepares for the 2014 Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships to be held February 19-22, at Ithaca College.
